Hello, This is my first question on here. First I'd like to thank Tex for having the site and writing his book. I have learned so much here, I have a doctor who doesn't believe diet plays a factor in healing. I was diagnosed with MC in September 2014, I'm down to 3mg budesonide. The doctor wants me to stay on that dose for another 4 weeks. Feeling great since I went GF, SF, DF and cut out all fiberous foods. Again, thanks to everyone here. This week I've been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, two places under my nose. My dermatologist wants me to have surgery in the next two weeks. I will be having the MOHs micrographics surgery which I have already done 4 years ago but this time I will request a plastic surgeon to sew me back up.

Has anyone had surgery while on Budesonide and does it slow down the healing?

Grateful for this forum!
Stacey

Food Intolerances : Gluten, casein, soy, and avenin, (avenin is the prolamin in oats, which is equivalent to the gluten in wheat), beef, grapes, peanuts, cashews, almonds, (but nut butters seem OK except for peanuts), citric acid, chocolate, and agar.

Hi Stacy,

Welcome to our Internet family. I'm sorry to hear that you will need to have surgery, but it's great to hear that you're doing so well controlling your MC symptoms by means of the diet changes that you have made.

Corticosteroids do slow down healing, but with the low dose you are taking, the budesonide shouldn't have a major effect on healing time. You probably should discuss the budesonide with your dermatologist (or whoever will be doing the surgery), and the plastic surgeon, to make sure that they are aware that you are taking it. Some surgeons (doing certain procedures) prefer that patients stop using corticosteroids several days prior to the surgery. It may not matter in this situation, though.

One of our biggest concerns when facing surgery is the use of oral (or systemic) antibiotics, since they are a very common trigger for MC flares. The procedure that you are having though, may not require any oral (or systemic) antibiotics, so that may not be a concern. And since you are still using budesonide, that should help to minimize the risk of a relapse of symptoms.

Again, welcome aboard, and I hope that the procedure goes smoothly, and that it won't have any significant effect on your MC remission.

You're very welcome, and please keep us posted on your progress.

Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
