Tex, Gabes and the MC family: I wanted to give you all an update. My worst symptoms were debilitating nausea accompanied by extreme weakness, complete lack of appetite with alarming weight loss, fatigue and brain fog along with diarrhea and loose stools. I was diagnosed with LC in mid September. I had my gallbladder removed in early August because Hida scan showed ejection fraction of 9 percent. However removing my gallbladder didn't alleviate my symptoms. Finally an endoscopy and colonoscopy were performed and the colonoscopy revealed the LC.
I began Lialda in mid September but was given no diet advice from my GI. I continued to get sicker every day. Soon after diagnosis I found this forum and started learning the whole story about my condition.
By early October I was so sick I was unable to work and went on sick leave. My job is very demanding physically and mentally stressful. The only symptom mostly under control was the D which was treated with Welchol. I was in the emergency room or doctors office approximately 10 to 12 times in September and October. Zofran barely touched the nausea but I continued to lose weight, eventually losing 30 plus pounds.
Finally it was determined that I was allergic to the Lialda and was switched to budesonide. However, by this time - mid October - I was up to speed on the diet and supplementation aspect of treating this disease and decided to treat my condition with an elimination diet and the elemental magnesium and vitamin d suggestions from this forum. I only took budesonide for 3 days.
Beginning in mid October I have the following diet: oven roasted chicken, pork chops, venison, potatoes, rice, rice chex, almond milk, bananas, well cooked asparagus or green beans.
After just 3 weeks I began seeing massive improvement. The nausea receded and the fatigue and brain fog started to lift. My appetite started to return. By mid November I had gained 6 lbs and felt well enough to return to work. Amazingly, for the last week I've actually been able to add in a large spoon of peanut butter and one or two sodas a day. I know the soda is not recommended but for a week I've had no ill effects.
The past week has been like a miracle. I'm not only working but starting to feel like my old self. I've not felt this good since June when I started getting sick. I'm not certain I'm in remission and will continue my current diet for the foreseeable future. I've gained 9 lbs since starting the diet and feel stronger every day so I see no reason to change it.
I posted this extremely long update with one thing in mind, to say thank you to all of you, especially Tex and Gabes. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Ive been able to treat my condition with the diet and supplementation advice on this forum. I know I still have a long road back to normalcy but I'm living again and hopeful again thanks to you all. God bless all of you because you've truly been a life saver! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Kelly,

Thank you for your inspiring update. There's no better way to start the day than by reading a great success story.

You forgot to give yourself credit for taking control of your recovery program when the medical approach wasn't working. Good for you for accepting responsibility for your own health and doing a great job of correcting the issues that were causing your symptoms.

And the best part is that if symptoms should return at some point in the future, now you know exactly what to do to regain your health. In the world of IBDs, it doesn't get much better than that.

Happy healing, and thank you for sharing the good news.

Tex

Thank you Tex. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that you've done more to alleviate the suffering caused by this disease than any individual doctor. If I could figure out what award to nominate you for I'd do so immediately. This forum is a such a blessing to so many.

Kelly,

I truly appreciate your kind words. I don't know if you have ever considered this, but if you would be so kind as to be willing to allow us to use your remarks as the basis of a testimonial to be listed on the Microscopic Colitis Foundation website, it could be very helpful for steering newly-diagnosed patients and others (maybe even including a few skeptical GI specialists) in the right direction as they contemplate their treatment options.

If you agree, any proposed uses would be sent to you for your approval before publication, of course. Your name and contact information would not be listed with the testimonial, by default. However, if you choose to allow your initials, or first name only, or city or state to be included, that's strictly your option (but certainly not a requirement). But please don't feel that you are under any obligation to agree to this. If you would rather not be involved, I certainly understand.

I apologize for posting this rather than sending it in a private message, but I thought that by posting it here, it might possibly inspire other members. If you prefer to PM or email your response, just click on the appropriate button at the bottom of this post.

This is another way to contribute to the foundation in a way that can pay dividends to the foundation and to MC patients everywhere, far into the future, at no cost.

Thank you for your consideration.

Tex

that is wonderful awesome news!!
that in 4-5 weeks you are seeing great improvements is super!

as Tex mentioned, your passion and diligence to the suggestions given is fantastic, the right mental and emotional approach is just as important as the eating plan and the supplements...
hope the improvements continue to flourish

take care

Tex, feel free to use my story. It's the least I can do for all that you, Gabes and the other members of this community have done for me. I'm forever in your debt. My GP doc said out of 1800 plus patients he's only had 4 with MC and one female patient had struggled for over a year but to his knowledge wasn't doing any kind of diet changes. I told him about my diet regime and this website and urged him to pass it on to her. I would still be struggling without the advice on this forum.

Tex, one small correction to my update. I just read it again and realized I should have said endoscopy and colonoscopy were performed. The colonoscopy revealed the LC. Thanks

So happy for you Kelly!

I love this forum and the helpful people in it for just the same reasoning you have stated too pulsing hearts I would have never made it as far in my recovery either if it hadn't been for finding the super healing information at this site. So glad to be able to pass their website along when I see others struggling with a colitis diagnosis.

Cheers to you on your success!
