Food Intolerances : Unknown

I was diagnosed with collagenous colitis about a year and a half ago. I've tried various methods of treatment since then and am now with a doctor I really like. She is having me try an elimination diet (low-FODMAP, in this case) to see how I'm responding.

It seemed like I was responding well for about a week, but since then it has been either back to "normal" and sometimes even with new symptoms (cramping and nausea, for example).

I understand that it may be the result of a food intolerance that may be low-FODMAP but is still bothering me. However, I have no idea how to determine what those foods are. Since I have symptoms daily, I don't know what foods I ate at what times could be causing problems, and I don't know what to do in terms of figuring out how to proceed. I'm in a fair amount of pain and discomfort and would love some advice. I've been dealing with this for years and am exhausted, sad, and frustrated and ready for an answer.

Thank you,

Food Intolerances : Gluten, casein, soy, and avenin, (avenin is the prolamin in oats, which is equivalent to the gluten in wheat), beef, grapes, peanuts, cashews, almonds, (but nut butters seem OK except for peanuts), citric acid, chocolate, and agar.

Hi Sarah.

Welcome to the forum. We have found that the best (quickest and most accurate) way to determine food sensitivities is by ordering a collection kit and then sending a stool sample to EnteroLab in Dallas, Texas. Most choose the A1 Panel + the C1 Panel:

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Welcome to the family. Sorry to hear that you are in pain and discomfort. These symptoms are not uncommon for MC sufferers but can be combatted by diet leading. Spend some time looking through the posts on the site as they will help to empower you with information which will help to combat your frustration. Tex's book (which has a link in the top right of each page) is a good read and will help to build your initial knowledge on the disease. While all this information is helpful, we are all unique in our sensitivities, so Tex's suggestion on the testing will help you get a better understanding of your personal triggers.
